Peter Pokieser

Current Work

Head of the World Pilot Center of Esophagology of OESO at the Department of Radiology of Roentgen Waehring, hosting a public outpatient clinic for swallowing patients. From 1994 to July 2026, more than 39,800 outpatient videofluoroscopy examinations were performed.

Education

  • Born in Vienna in 1960.
  • 1974–1986: Administration and part-time radiologic assistant at Radiologie Währing.
  • 1986: Medical degree, Medical University of Vienna (MedUni Wien).
  • 1992: Certified as a full radiologist.
  • 1997: Appointed Associate Professor of Radiology.
  • Since 2001: Continuous training and development of national and international eLearning projects.
  • 2012: Austrian Certificate for Breast Screening.
  • 2015: Breast Care Center Doc Certification.

Professional Experience, Teaching and Research

  • Since 1989: Head of the Austrian Working Group for Clinical Application and Research of Videofluoroscopy of Deglutition at MedUni Wien.
  • 1988–2003: Interventional research on image-guided parenchymal biopsies and intraoperative ultrasound of the liver and pancreas.
  • Since 1992: Radiologic eLearning activities.
  • Since 2000: Research focused on interdisciplinary large-group eLearning.
  • Development of the Unified Patient System for multimedia structured clinical case discussions.
  • Since 2008: International clinical case discussions with OESO.
  • Since 2011: Development of international webinar projects with DRG, ESSD, and OESO.
  • From 2017: Visiting Professor for Deglutology at KU Leuven, Belgium.
  • June 2026: Elected as a Pilot Center of Esophagology of OESO, the World Society for Specialized Studies on Diseases of the Esophagus.

Activities in International Societies

  • Fellow of ESSD (European Society for Swallowing Disorders).
  • Treasurer of OESO (World Society for Specialized Studies on Diseases of the Esophagus).
  • Member of the OESO Foundation in collaboration with the UNESCO Chair for Digital Continuing Medical Education and Capacity Building at the University of Geneva.
