Sustainability at ESSD 2026
At ESSD 2026, we are taking a number of steps to reduce waste and make our congress more sustainable. From selecting a venue committed to sustainability to reducing printed materials and making more sustainable catering choices, we are looking for ways to minimise our environmental impact.
A Venue Committed to Sustainability
Leidse Schouwburg – Stadsgehoorzaal is committed to reducing its environmental impact while preserving the historic character of its buildings.
Its initiatives include:
- Solar panels and energy-efficient lighting.
- Waste separation, recycling and reuse.
- Efforts to reduce food waste.
The venue holds the Green Key Gold certification and continues to improve its sustainability practices.
Catering
Our catering choices are part of our sustainability efforts. Meals during the congress will focus on vegetarian options, helping us reduce the environmental impact of catering.
Less Materials, Less Waste
This year, we are reducing the amount of physical materials provided to participants.
Please note that congress bags and participant goodies will not be provided at ESSD 2026. This helps us avoid unnecessary materials and reduce waste.
Sustainable Travel
Leiden is a compact and walkable city, and the congress venue is within walking distance of Leiden Centraal railway station. We encourage participants to use public transport, walk or cycle whenever possible.
Refill & Reuse
We encourage you to bring your own reusable water bottle and avoid single-use plastics whenever possible.
Every Small Step Helps
We hope these actions will help us reduce the environmental impact of ESSD 2026. Thank you for supporting our efforts and helping us make the congress a more sustainable event.
